Guinea: Landfill collapse in Conakry leaves dozens dead

In Guinea, rescue operations are continuing after the disaster at the Dar-es-Salam landfill in Conakry. At least 30 people have died after heavy rains caused a huge pile of waste to collapse. Authorities have promised to evacuate families still living near the site, which was already due to be closed.

A new step towards peace in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo: Kinshasa and the M23 have adopted a roadmap to guide the next phase of negotiations, following talks held in Switzerland with several mediators. The two sides also plan to establish a mechanism to monitor the ceasefire.

As the Ebola outbreak continues in the DRC, Pope Leo XIV has called for greater international mobilisation. Speaking from the Vatican, he urged the international community to increase support for those affected while involving local communities in prevention efforts. The outbreak has already claimed more than 2,500 lives.

In Somalia, drought is worsening an already serious humanitarian crisis. According to the World Food Programme, six million people are facing acute hunger, including nearly two million in emergency conditions. Climate shocks, insecurity and declining international funding are continuing to worsen the situation in the Horn of Africa.

Tensions are rising between Chad and Sudan. N’Djamena has accused the Sudanese army of carrying out an air operation on its territory, with drones and aircraft allegedly bombing a convoy of vehicles that had arrived from Libya. Chadian authorities have condemned what they describe as a violation of their sovereignty, as the war in Sudan continues to spill over into the region.

In Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, health ministers from the 47 member states of the WHO African Region will meet from 25 to 28 August for the 76th session of the Regional Committee. The meeting will focus on adopting new policies and strategies to strengthen health systems and improve access to healthcare across the continent.

On 26 and 27 August in Douala, Cameroon, trade experts and business stakeholders will meet to approve a practical guide aimed at facilitating the movement of goods under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The goal is to speed up the implementation of Africa’s single market and remove barriers to trade between African countries.

On 27 August in Monaco, UEFA will hold the draw for the league phase of the 2026-2027 Champions League. The 36 qualified teams will discover their eight opponents ahead of the start of the competition on 8 September.

The African Union will hold an extraordinary summit on 29 and 30 August in Luanda, Angola, focusing on strengthening mechanisms for preventing and resolving conflicts across the continent. Ahead of the event, the AU Commission has opened online accreditation for journalists wishing to cover the summit.
