Gabon revives Its cultural heritage at Libreville’s festival of cultures

After an eight-year absence, Libreville has once again become a showcase for Gabon’s rich cultural diversity, as the 15th edition of the Festival of Cultures brings together traditions, languages, rituals and craftsmanship from across the country.

Held from August 21 to 23 along Avenue Jean-Paul II, the festival brings together representatives of Gabon’s nine provinces, alongside artists, artisans, cultural groups and visitors. This year’s theme is “Reappropriation of our Cultural Values.”

For young visitors, many of whom were born after the festival’s previous edition, the event is less a return to a familiar tradition than an opportunity to discover their heritage.

“It’s our heritage. Nowadays, it’s very old and very rare, because even at the National Museum, you can no longer find many of these objects,” one young visitor said.

He said preserving traditional objects and practices was important at a time when some were misunderstood.

“It has nothing to do with witchcraft. It’s about preserving our history, so that we have a record of it.”

Another young visitor described the festival as an opportunity to reconnect with Gabonese history and culture.

“We can rediscover our culture, our history and our heritage through this festival. It’s truly a wealth of knowledge being offered to us.”

Preserving traditions for future generations

Across the festival grounds, traditional arts and crafts are being displayed alongside performances and demonstrations.

For artisans, the event provides an important platform to showcase their work and connect with the public.

The programme also focuses on transmission, with storytelling, traditional and contemporary dances, cultural demonstrations and activities designed to introduce younger generations to local heritage.

The return of the festival is part of a wider effort to strengthen cultural identity and preserve traditions that risk being forgotten. Organisers say the diversity represented by the country’s nine provinces should be viewed as a source of national cohesion.

Senegal joins the celebration

The festival is also looking beyond Gabon’s borders this year.

Senegal is the guest country of honour, with a dedicated cultural village showcasing its crafts, clothing, music and traditions. Visitors have been able to see demonstrations by Senegalese artisans and discover objects made from materials including coconut, forest seeds and palm wood.

A Senegalese representative expressed gratitude to the Gabonese authorities for the invitation and the opportunity to take part in the landmark 15th edition.

The participation reflects the festival’s broader ambition to make culture a bridge between communities and countries.

After eight years away, Libreville’s Festival of Cultures is once again giving Gabon’s traditions a public stage — while placing the emphasis firmly on passing them on to the next generation.
