‘Going to the beach’ looks very different in Britain

While a British summer is never a guarantee of hot weather, there’s one thing you can be sure of: Brits will be going to the beach.

For centuries, and in all kinds of weather, the British have licked ice creams, strolled piers and dropped coins in arcade games at the seaside. The town of Scarborough on England’s North Sea coastline, widely considered Britain’s first seaside resort, has been welcoming tourists to its restorative spa waters for around 400 years.

“The concept of going to the beach for leisure was something that the British invented,” architectural historian Kathryn Ferry, told CNN, in a view shared by many experts. “It’s part of our nation’s story, our island’s story, and there is a sense that it is important for our identity. British people have that need to go to the coast and smell that sea air,” she said.

While affection for the British seaside has, much like the tides, surged and fallen over the 20th century, it has been an enduring source of inspiration for artists including the prolific photographer Martin Parr, whose distinctive and radical portraits explore social class and leisure in the north of England in the 1980s, and multidisciplinary artist Vinca Petersen, whose work depicts youth and subcultures at the beach in the 1990s.

Two new photography books this year explore the unique character of the British beach.

The 2020 pandemic, however, helped to shine a light on British seaside resorts and local beaches, according to Ferry.

In Ferry’s new book, “Twentieth Century Seaside Architecture: Pools, Piers and Pleasure Around Britain’s Coast,” postcards are used to explore how societal and cultural attitudes interacted with the architecture of the British seaside. “I love the mundaneness of these postcards,” she said. “They are historical documents, but are flimsy and throwaway.”

A combination of illustrations and photographs show the grandeur of classical and art deco designs of the interwar years, through to the post war buildings inspired by the 1951 Festival of Britain, and the concrete brutalism of the 1960s and 1970s. “Seaside resorts were competing with each other, and that meant that if one place had a new facility that was going to give them a step up with tourists in terms of attractions, then lots of other places would follow,” said Ferry, referring to architectural features such as lidos, pavilions, bandstands and distinctive roof shapes commonly found at British seasides.

Ferry isn’t the only academic researcher beguiled by these snapshots of another era. A little over a decade ago, Karen Shepherdson, the co-author of a 2019 book on the subject, “Seaside Photographed,” also founded the South East Archive of Seaside Photography, which houses collections of commercial seaside photography dating from 1860 to 1990.

Shepherdson’s own research interest is in ‘walkies’ — images made of people walking down the promenade that were captured by a commercial photographer and printed onto a postcard. The tradition emerged in the 19th century, a time when people generally did not have easy access to cameras or could afford portrait painting. Travelling photographers offered their services to families walking along the beach, who could take home a keepsake photograph in just a few minutes.

Shepherdson’s callout for walkies from the 20th century led to an influx of contributions to the archive from people sharing their personal postcards. “People would hold them like relics, and touch them as they were telling us their stories,” said Shepherdson. “These, in essence worthless photographs, are priceless and powerful.”

With the emergence of international budget holidays and cheaper airfare prices, the British seaside holiday fell out of fashion in the 1970s and 1980s. In some towns, seaside tourism declined and even collapsed, with decades of neglect creating a chasm between extreme poverty and wealth. These long-term existing inequalities meant coastal communities were particularly vulnerable to the impact of Covid-19 lockdowns, with areas experiencing some of the largest drops in local spending as well as the highest rises in unemployment in the country in 2020.

However, restriction of movement during Covid-19 also led to an increase in staycations and domestic holidays at the seaside. In some cases, beaches even became severely overcrowded. A resurgent interest in the seaside has also led to gentrification and exacerbated inequalities in some areas; house prices in the southeast coastal town of Margate for example more than doubled in the decade from 2012 to 2022. Recent research has also shown that young people in coastal communities across the UK are three times more likely to have a mental health condition than peers in other parts of the country.

For London-based photographer Sophie Green, whose projects were forced to pause due to lockdown restrictions in 2020, the seaside became a vital location to create new work. Five years later, her ongoing project “Beachology” has taken her to several beaches across the UK, offering a contemporary portrait of British life at the seaside. “I’ve always been drawn to distinct social settings where people are defining a sense of themselves, or how particular social customs or rituals are played out,” said Green, whose latest photobook “Tangerine Dreams” was published earlier this year. “The beach is another iteration of that: a distinct place where people are a version of themselves that they might not be in other spaces.”

For Green, the beach is a prime site for people-watching and observing the intimacies of everyday human interactions. “The textures and the environment, the seascapes and the colours are so specific — whether that be the funfairs with the bright, gaudy, lurid colours, or the casinos with their amazing typography — there’s a distinct aesthetic to those spaces which you would never find anywhere else in the world,” she said.

Green’s project has taken her to beaches spanning Hunstanton –– known locally as “Sunny Hunny” –– in Norfolk, Blackpool with its iconic tower and Skegness, which was home to the first Butlin’s holiday resort camp built in 1935. “Everyone goes to the beach with the same agenda, and there’s something quite special about that, where people are united, can be in nature and can feel liberated,” said Green.

In recent decades, art has also been used to attract visitors looking for cultural experiences alongside their beach visits, said Ferry. In 1993, the Tate Gallery, St Ives, opened in the south west coastal region of Cornwall. The Turner Contemporary and Hastings Contemporary galleries both opened on the south east coast in 2011 and 2012. Other public art initiatives include sculptor Damien Hirst’s site specific work ‘Verity’ that stands at Ilfracombe, North Devon, and The Great Promenade Show; a series of public art installations along the Blackpool promenade that has run since 2001.

While the pandemic offered a kind of enforced rediscovery of the seaside, it hasn’t quite had the sustained pull and boost for local tourism that some hoped it might. But whatever the economic –– or weather –– forecast, the British will always have the beach. “Times are hard globally and financially, and I think the seaside offers us a place of relative democracy,” said Shepherdson.

“When we’re on the beach, we’re stripped down. It becomes a very democratic space, and by and large, a free space where you don’t have to pay,” she added “There are very few actual lived experiences that we might think of in that shared way.”

Women’s Euros: England produces another dramatic comeback to make second consecutive final

England has made late comebacks its calling card at the 2025 Women’s Euros and produced another dramatic finish in its 2-1 victory over Italy in the semifinals in Geneva, Switzerland on Tuesday.

The Lionesses had trailed most of the match after Barbara Bonansea’s first half goal on 33 minutes until Michelle Agyemang equalized in the 96th minute, with less than two minutes of added time remaining.

In extra time and with the contest looking as if it was going to penalties for the second consecutive match, England was awarded a penalty in the 117th minute when Beth Mead was fouled in the box.

Although Azzurre goalkeeper Laura Giuliani initially saved Chloe Kelly’s spot-kick, the English forward was quickest to react, stabbing the rebound home from close range and booking the Lionesses’ place in the final in the most dramatic fashion.

“It is definitely a movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat,” Kelly told reporters afterwards. “These girls are brilliant – they make me so proud to be English, as every English person is right now.

“I can’t believe what happened. The togetherness of this group is so special.”

Kelly (No. 18) scored the winning goal against Italy.

England had qualified for the semifinals in an extraordinary manner, scoring two late goals to come from 2-0 down to force extra time against Sweden before a dramatic penalty shootout unfolded with the Lionesses managing to keep their cool at the key moment.

Italy, on the other hand, had beaten Norway in the quarterfinals but was the heavy underdog against the Women’s Euros defending champion, looking for its first spot in the final since 1997.

Despite the pre-match predictions, it was the Italians who struck first. A probing cross from Sofia Cantore caused all manner of confusion among the England defenders before Bonansea was able to corral the ball and smash it into the roof of the net.

With the Azzurre ahead, England went on the front foot in search of the equalizer. And whether through some wayward finishing or some inspired goalkeeping from Giuliani, the Lionesses were unable to draw themselves level.

That was until the 96th minute when Agyemang, who has made a habit as a substitute of providing big, late impacts at this tournament, once again displayed her proficiency off the bench.

Giuliani could only parry a cross with the rebound falling to the 19-year-old’s feet where she smashed the ball home.

The goal sparked wild scenes of celebration, with Italy’s players clearly distraught at conceding so late into the match.

Agyemang has been England's game-changing substitute at the Women's Euros.

With the game in extra-time, both teams had chances to score again – Agyemang came closest in the 117th minute where her lob bounced off the crossbar.

But with penalties looming once again for England, Mead was fouled in the box as she attempted to connect with a Lauren Hemp cross, with referee Ivana Martinčić pointing to the spot.

There was even more drama though as Kelly – with her unique run-up before her penalty, comprising of a hop and a jump – had her penalty saved but managed to tap home to clinch a dramatic win.

The victory continues England’s success at major international tournaments, with this marking the team’s third final in a row; the Lionesses won the Women’s Euros on home soil in 2022 and lost to Spain in the World Cup final in 2023.

“I feel like it hasn’t really sunk in. It was just a rollercoaster of emotions, trying to stay focused in the 120 minutes to make sure we didn’t let Italy back into the game,” England defender Lucy Bronze said afterwards. “I can imagine once I’m in the dressing room, and we’re on the bus, and we get back to (the team base in) Zurich, it’ll sink in that we’ve made it to another final.

“I don’t think you’ll find a team in world football with more fight and more resilience than this England team. To come back and to never give up, the same as we did in the previous game, and to fight to the end; we kept our dreams alive and then to finish it in extra time as well is unbelievable.”

England will face either Spain or Germany in Sunday’s final in Basel, with the two facing off in their semifinal on Wednesday in Zurich.

Live updates: House to send lawmakers home early to stall Epstein-related move

House Republicans want to name the John F. Kennedy Center’s opera house after first lady Melania Trump.

Republicans included language that would designate the opera house at the center for the performing arts in Washington, DC, as the “First Lady Melania Trump Opera House” in an amendment for a spending bill for the Interior Department.

It’s unclear whether the bill will pass the full House, let alone whether it could make it into a bipartisan agreement with the Senate, so it remains to be seen whether the provision will make it into law. The House is set to recess tomorrow, leaving lawmakers with limited time when they return in September before the government runs out of funding.

During the House Appropriations Committee’s meeting on the bill today, GOP Rep. Mike Simpson — who introduced the amendment — said “yes, we renamed the opera house at the Kennedy Center for the first lady, who is the honorary chairman of the board of trustees of the Kennedy Center.”

He argued that it’s an “excellent way to recognize” Melania Trump’s “support and commitment to promoting the arts.”

The amendment was adopted by the committee, 35-22, with Democratic Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez joining with the panel’s Republicans to vote yes.

The first lady’s office did not respond to CNN’s request for comment.

Trump accuses Obama of treason, annotated

Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard on Friday released a slew of documents that she said implicate members of the Obama administration for “treasonous” behavior during the 2016 election.

The claims confuse the allegation that Russia interfered in the 2016 election with the idea that Russia actively tried to change results by hacking into voting systems. CNN’s Jeremy Herb and Katie Bo Lillis went through them and talked to people who worked on a bipartisan Senate review of the 2016 election.

“Wildly misleading” is how the information was described by one source in their report.

But that didn’t stop President Donald Trump from accusing former President Barack Obama of treason, a crime punishable by death in the US, when he was asked about it in the Oval Office on Tuesday. Trump made the accusation while appearing at an event to discuss trade with Philippines leader Ferdinand Marcos Jr.

Trump’s very long, meandering answer is a window into how his mind works. All roads lead back to immigration and his 2020 election loss.

Obama’s office issued a rare statement in response:

“Out of respect for the office of the presidency, our office does not normally dignify the constant nonsense and misinformation flowing out of this White House with a response. But these claims are outrageous enough to merit one,” said spokesman Patrick Rodenbush. “These bizarre allegations are ridiculous and a weak attempt at distraction. Nothing in the document issued last week undercuts the widely accepted conclusion that Russia worked to influence the 2016 presidential election but did not successfully manipulate any votes. These findings were affirmed in a 2020 report by the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee, led by then-Chairman Marco Rubio.”

Here’s a look at what Trump said, along with some context from CNN reporting.

QUESTION from reporter: Tulsi Gabbard has submitted a criminal referral to the Department of Justice. From your perspective, who should the DOJ target as part of their investigation, what specific figures in the Obama administration?

TRUMP: Well, based on what I read, and I read pretty much what you read, it would be President Obama. He started it. And Biden was there with them and (then-FBI Director James) Comey was there and (then-Director of National Intelligence James) Clapper. The whole group was there — (then-CIA Director John) Brennan. They were all there, the — in a room. Right here, this was the room.

(Trump said all of this in the Oval Office, which he has bedecked with gold filigree, portraits from the White House vault and a copy, behind a curtain, of the Declaration of Independence.)

TRUMP: This (the Oval Office) is much more beautiful than it was then, but that’s OK. I have nice pictures up. They came out of the vaults. They were in there for 100 years. This is much more beautiful. We have the Declaration of Independence now in the room, which wasn’t here. I guess people didn’t feel too good about putting it here, but I do. But you know what? If you look at that — those papers, they have them stone cold, and it was President Obama. It wasn’t lots of people all over the place — it was them too — but the leader of the gang was President Obama, Barack Hussein Obama. Have you heard of him?

(From CNN’s report: The new allegations from Gabbard lean on assessments before the election and statements from Obama-era intelligence officials finding that Russia did not alter the election results through cyber-attacks aimed at infiltrating voting systems. But the January 2017 intelligence community assessment never concluded that Russian cyberattacks altered the outcome of the 2016 election or compromised any election infrastructure in the first place, though state voting systems were probed.

Instead, the assessment focused on Russia’s influence campaign ordered by President Vladimir Putin and cyber operations against US and Democratic Party officials, including the hacked emails released by WikiLeaks.)

TRUMP: And except for the fact that he gets shielded by the press for his entire life, that’s the one they — look, he’s guilty. It’s not a question. You know, I like to say, ‘Let’s give it time. It’s there. He’s guilty.’ They — this was treason, this was every word you can think of.

(Treason, the crime of trying to overthrow the government, could be punishable by death in the US. Even when the Department of Justice during the Biden administration accused Trump of election interference for trying to upend the 2020 election, it did not accuse him of treason.)

TRUMP: They tried to steal the election. They tried to obfuscate the election. They did things that nobody’s ever even imagined, even in other countries. You’ve seen some pretty rough countries. This man (Marcos) has seen some pretty rough countries but you’ve never seen anything like it. And we have all of the documents. And from what I — Tulsi told me, she’s got thousands of additional documents coming.

(We anticipate seeing them, although previously promised document dumps have failed to live up to expectations.)

TRUMP: So President Obama, it was his concept, his idea, but he also got it from crooked Hillary Clinton, crooked as a $3 bill. Hillary Clinton and — and her group, the Democrats, spent $12 million to Christopher Steele to write up a report that was a total fake report. Took two years to figure that out, but it came out that it was a total fake report, it was made-up, fiction. And they used that — now, the one thing they weren’t able to do was to — and probably the only thing I respect about the press in years is the press refused to write it before the election, they refused to put it in. The Steele report was a disaster, all lies, all fabrication, all admitted — an admitted fraud. She paid $12 million, and the Democrats, for that report to a wise guy named Christopher Steele. He wrote a phony report, and they wanted to get that report in before the election.

(The Steele dossier has been discredited, but the larger conclusion of the US intelligence community that Russia tried to meddle in the US election has stood. So has the Mueller report’s conclusion that there were interactions between Trump’s campaign and Russians during the 2016 campaign. Mueller’s report did not conclude that Trump’s campaign colluded with Russians or that Trump committed a crime. It also did not exonerate him.)

TRUMP: And I’ll tell you what, I talk about — all of the time — the fake news, how bad it is, but in this case, they wouldn’t do it. They saw it, they read it, and they said, “We don’t believe it.” And it was only after — substantially, like, a month and a half after the election that it got printed and it was a big wisp — it was just like a bang of nothing, because the election had ended. If that report had gotten published by the New York Times or somebody — and I respect the Times for maybe only this cause they’re crooked as you can be, they’re a terrible paper, a crooked, corrupt paper — but for this one moment, they said, “This is bullshit. We can’t put this in.”

(At the time, few organizations published the full Steele dossier in large part because it could not be corroborated, unlike Russia’s election meddling, which was documented by US intelligence agencies.)

TRUMP: And neither could any other pa — Wall Street Journal’s a lousy paper, very, very dishonest paper. As you see, I’m suing them for a lot of money ‘cause they do things very badly. It’s a really — it’s got a nice name but it’s really — in my opinion, it’s a terrible paper and it can be corrupt. But just so you know, they didn’t take the Steele report. It was the dossier. Remember the famous dossier? I called it the fake news dossier. The news wouldn’t publish it. And I’m amazed, they had two and a half months. It was finished two and a half months. That was supposed to be what was going to happen and it got published a couple of months after the election. And frankly, nobody cared too much about it. But that was a big thing.

TRUMP: No, no, we caught Hillary Clinton. We caught Barack Hussein Obama. They’re the ones — and then you have many, many people under them. (Former national security adviser) Susan Rice. They’re all there. The names are all there. And I guess they figured they’re going to put this in classified information and nobody will ever see it again, but it doesn’t work that way.

(There’s no evidence for this type of conspiracy.)

TRUMP: And it’s the most unbelievable thing I think I’ve ever read. So, you want to take a look at that and stop talking about nonsense, because this is big stuff. Never has a thing like this happened in the history of our country. And by the way, it morphed into the 2020 race and the 2020 race was rigged. And it was, it was a rigged election. And because it was rigged, we have millions of people in our country. We have — we had inflation. We solved the inflation problem.

(There’s still no evidence the 2020 election was rigged. There’s plenty of evidence that Trump tried to subvert the results. The inflation problem is not necessarily solved, especially if Trump’s tariffs go into effect.)

TRUMP: But millions and millions of people came into our country because of that. And people that shouldn’t have been — people from gangs, and from jails, and from mental institutions. People that we don’t want in our country and people that we’re getting out, dangerous people — 11,888 murderers. Many of them, 50 percent, more than 50 percent, murdered more than one person. I hate to say this with such a distinguished guest but, you know, they asked me a question. I got to answer the question.

TRUMP: No, Barack Hussein Obama is the ringleader. Hillary Clinton was right there with them, and so was sleepy Joe Biden. And so were the rest of them. Comey, Clapper, the whole group, and they tried to rig an election and they got caught. And then they did rig the election in 2020.

And then, because I knew I won that election by a lot, I did it a third time and I won in a landslide. Every swing state won the popular vote. But I won that all the same way in 2020 and look at the damage that was caused.

(Trump did win in 2024. It was far from a landslide.)
