President Donald Trump said that he would like to own the land in South Korea where US military bases are located.

“We have a very good relationship militarily. They would say, ‘But we gave you land,’ and I said, ‘No you didn’t, you leased us land.’ There’s a big difference between giving and leasing,” Trump said.

The lands in South Korea with US military bases belong to the South Korean government, according to the Status of Forces Agreement. The lands and are provided to the United States Forces Korea “without charges.”

Trump added that “maybe one of the things I’d like to do is ask them to give us ownership of the land where we have the big fort.”

The US president said that the US “spent a lot of money building a fort” with a contribution from South Korea, “but I would like to see if we could rid of the lease and get ownership of the land where we have a massive military base.”

Trump did not specify which base he was referring to, but Camp Humphreys in South Korea is the largest US military base overseas, with a population bigger than some US cities. A recent expansion had cost $10.8 billion, 90% of which was paid by the South Korean government, Gen. Vincent Brooks, then-commander of USFK, said in a dedication speech.

The USFK moved that base from Yongsan, in the middle of Seoul, to Pyeongtaek, outside the greater Seoul area, in 2022. The land in Yongsan has been returned and parts have been converted into parks.
