UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy paid a visit to Vice President JD Vance on Sunday in Washington, DC, Lammy’s spokesperson told CNN.

Their “warm” private meeting, without aides, was primarily about Ukraine, the spokesperson said, “and went on for considerably longer than planned.” Lammy was joined by his wife and they went to Mass and had lunch with the Vances before the conversation.

In remarks in the House of Commons on Monday, Lammy acknowledged his Sunday meeting with Vance when answering questions about the war in Ukraine, as well as the three days he spent alongside Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Canada.

Lammy also said he was pleased to see the announcement of a ceasefire proposal by the US after talks with Ukrainian counterparts in Jeddah last week. The proposal was immediately agreed to by Ukraine and supported by European allies.

“And it is for Putin to unconditionally now accept that ceasefire,” Lammy said, “the ball is in his court.”

Some background: The UK has been one of the most vocal proponents of a US “backstop” to guarantee Ukraine’s security after a peace deal. While Vance has been among Ukraine’s harshest critics in the Trump administration and led the scolding of President Volodymyr Zelensky in the recent Oval Office blowup.

Lammy had just come from the G7 Foreign Ministers Meeting in Quebec where he’d met with Rubio. While Lammy and Vance were speaking in Washington, more conversations about Ukraine and Russia were taking place over the weekend at Mar-a-Lago where special envoy Steve Witkoff, freshly back from Moscow, had debriefed President Donald Trump, national security adviser Mike Waltz and Rubio.
