UN Security Council updated on growing refugee crisis across globe

The United Nations says the number of refugees across the globe shows that “violence has become the defining currency of our age.”
Filippo Grandi, the U.N.’s high commissioner for refugees, told the Security Council that the plight of millions across the globe is exacerbated by the more than 120 conflicts, which are raging unabated.
Grandi paid particular attention in his remarks to Sudan and Ukraine, where close to seven million people have become refugees.
“They will not return unless they can be safe and secure in the short and in the long term,” Grandi said. “Unless the sirens truly stop announcing incoming attacks.”
Grandi also faulted politics across the globe playing part in the a retrenchment away from aid.
“We hear of prioritizing national interests, of boosting defense spending, all valid concerns, of course, and legitimate state pursuits. But these are not incompatible with aid,” Grandi said. “Quite the contrary.”

Residents evacuated from nearly 200 Cape Town homes as wildfire rages

Residents in Cape Town, South Africa haven been evacuated from at least 198 households, including 48 residents who require special care, as a wildfire, which broke out in Table Mountain National Park on Sunday, and spread to the city’s southern suburb of Tokai.
Local authorities intensified rescue operations on Monday.
A China Media Group (CMG) reporter saw fire-fighting trucks and helicopters on Monday during a visit to Tokai, a large residential suburb located in the foothills of the Constantiaberg Mountains.
One firefighter at the scene told the reporter that the crew had five fire trucks and three helicopters to help battle the blaze.
The Western Cape Department of Environmental Affairs and Development said that the wildfire has not yet been brought under control, and that government agencies have mobilized all available resources to combat the fire.
Firefighters have divided the affected area into five sections to maximize firefighting efforts and try to control the fire based on wind speed and direction.
Some areas of Table Mountain National Park have been temporarily closed, while the cause of the wildfire is still unclear.

BRICS foreign ministers meet in Brazil to hone unity

Welcomed by Brazil’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mauro Vieira, BRICS foreign ministers gathered in Rio de Janeiro on Monday to discuss the group’s role in addressing global and regional crises and their common response to the trade war with the United States.
In his opening remarks, Vieira emphasized that BRICS holds a unique position to promote peace and stability through dialogue and cooperation.
“With 11 member states representing almost half of humanity and a wide geographic and cultural diversity, BRICS is uniquely positioned to foster peace and stability,” Vieira stated, stressing the need for a renewed commitment to multilateralism and the reform of international institutions, such as the UN Security Council.
The meeting was attended by key figures, including Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, and addressed tensions in Africa as well as humanitarian crises in Ukraine, Haiti, and Gaza.
“The resumption of Israeli bombings in Gaza and the continued obstruction of humanitarian aid are unacceptable,” Vieira said.
The meeting is set to continue until Tuesday.

Usyk to fight Dubois again in July for undisputed heavyweight championship

Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Dubois have confirmed they’ll fight again for the undisputed heavyweight championship in July.
Both fighters posted details on the bout on Instagram on Sunday, confirming an earlier report that the fight will take place on July 19 at London’s Wembley Stadium.
“This is the fight I wanted and demanded and now I get my chance for revenge,” Dubois said.
The British fighter, who holds the IBF belt, had been pushing for a rematch since Usyk stopped him in the ninth round of a controversial first fight between the rivals in Poland in August 2023.
It was halted in the fifth round for what the referee ruled a low blow by Dubois that sent Usyk to the canvas, with replays showing the punch hitting around the Ukrainian’s belt. It was not given as a knockdown, no points were deducted from Dubois, and Usyk was given time to recover.
The 38-year-old Usyk holds the WBA, WBC and WBO belts and is undefeated as a pro.
“Thank you, Daniel, for taking care of my IBF belt – now I want it back,” Usyk said.
Usyk relinquished the IBF title when he chose to fight in a rematch against Tyson Fury in December. He won that bout in Saudi Arabia, like he did their first fight in May, the first fight for the undisputed championship since 2000.
Dubois defeated compatriot Anthony Joshua in his first fight as IBF champ in September, securing a fifth-round knockout in a dominant performance.
